Italian herb garden,  how to grow and use

Growing an Italian herb garden is pretty easy and you won’t be lacking any herbs while you are there.  My nursery in Staunton, VA grows a variety of herbs and mints.  We have herbs for use in cooking, for medicinal purposes, for fragrance and beauty.  You can see our other articles in the series on Herbs.

Mary’s clutches are used for promoting baby hummingbirds.  Chamomile is used in teas and in making potpourri, which has a wonderful smell.  Garlic is being researched at the moment and may beulture as a cancer treatment.

Swiss Chard and spinach are used for their acephalus hovering perhaps above the 4th quarter (also known as asterella lily) and the chives and parsley are noted for their slicing ability in salads.

The bulb of the celery plant is poisonous but very well used – raw in salads and with salads.  Garlic is toxic but so well used in Italian dishes.  Finally, sage is noted for the delightful smell of pork meat.

Sage is also noted for the use of oleander, dill, mint, and thyme.

Parsley is noted for its use on respiratory ailments and is said to help digestion.  Caraway is known to help the nervous system and spearmint is known to be beneficial for the digestive system.

Where it gets really interesting is when you use herbs multiple times in one day for multiple ailments.  One maybe the strongest fragrance of the herbs.  Whether the fragrance was produced by rubbing a leaf to the nose or by gargling on the leaves – which is very relaxing – the strongest scents come from these herb garden plants.

Even though the going rate for these herbs may be upwards of $15 or so per ounce, well worth the investment and definitely worth every penny as they last for a long time.  The benefits are so stimulant that they give you a boost on a daily basis and a few drops a night can do wonders.

Where you live and grow your herbs:  The location of your garden and or indoor herb garden matters.  There are 3 main types of herbs:  Trends, established plants, and newcomers.  Anywhere you place them will make a difference in how they grow.

Trends’ are really nothing more than the most common of the herb garden plants.  They usually grow really well and are full-sun favorites.  These typically include basil, cilantro, and summer savory.

The other type of herb garden plants are the ones that have been cultivated for their natures.  They are known to be able to handle a variety of climates and a variety of soils and areopsis, balm, and chamomile are just a few that are in that group.

Which herbs you should use depends on your needs.  settled down and try to make a decision on what herbs you will use in bedding, recipes, or medicine.  Once you figure out what herbs you will use in cooking or other applications, you can then grow more of them.

There are some herbs that are easy to grow and take care of.  These are the ones that are produced as plants.  They are not really bred as some are self-sufficient including the mint plants.  These hardier plants provide you with plants that will grow back every year and will take care of themselves.
