If you want to enjoy fresh tasty tomatoes throughout the summer then you need to start growing your own. It is not hard and by following these ten steps you can have a fast and productive crop of tomatoes.
1. Choose a container that will hold the number of plants you need for your garden. I find that 8″ containers easily yield anywhere from 30 to 50 plants and they last a long time so you really don’t need a lot of Space. Once you decide how many plants you want to plant you can decide on the container and also decide if you want a wheel barrow to easily move your plants from one place to another.
2. Fill the container with soil and then dig a hole for the plant that is deep enough so that the top of the root ball is just below the surface of the soil. You can fill the container with soil and just simply push the plant into the dirt. You will need to place a dowel rod into the soil and then fill around the plant with soil.
3. Cover the container with a clear plastic bag. This will allow the moisture and the sun to penetrate the bag and penetrate the roots of the plant. This cuts down on the often asked question of why your tomato plants have died before you have a chance to harvest.
4. When you plant the seedling dig a shallow hole and place the plant so that the top of the root ball is just below the surface of the soil. Do not compact the soil down over the stem of the plant. You now want to create a mound of soil in the planting hole so that your tomato plant will be able to sink its roots deep into the soil.
5. Just before you start adding soil to the container again you need to water the container. Add enough water to cover the container and then place your clear plastic bag on top of the container and cut away the rest of the bags.
6. Now it is time to add the soil. If you want to grow tomatoes in a pot you will need to first learn how to can tomatoes in a pot. You will need to can 6 to 8 tomatoes seeds on top of the soil that you started with. After you add the soil till the soil Add enough water to cover the entire container and then place the plastic bag back over the jar until the soil and tomato seedlings are covered.
7. Add upside down planters around the container and you are ready to hang your tomato plants. You may want to tie the seedlings to the upside down planters to make sure that they are sturdy.
8. When you are growing large tomatoes such as the ones used in salads you will need an aggregate water bed. This is a very large area that you can make by yourself. Simply dig a hole in the ground in a position you have chosen and fill it with aggregate then let the soil to settle and build up. You can build up the mound as you go. Plant your tomatoes in the rubble after the soil has settled and you are sure that you have the required soil for the particular plant you are growing.
9. If you grow very large tomatoes then you will need an anti-rotation fan, this ensures that the tomatoes stay cool and protected during the degrees of autumn and winter.
10. Just before you are about to use your tomatoes in recipes, you will need to prune them. To avoid the blossom end of the fruit from hurting, you will want to remove the tomato a little with a knife. This will prevent the tomato from getting near to the end of the branch, which can cause cracking.
11. There are fungi that can infect your tomato plants, and one of them, the Botrytis mold, which will cause the blossoms of the plant to rot, or even the whole plant to rot. Learn how to control the fungi at the source and you and your plant will be fine.
